University of MD - East Campus:

The University of Maryland and its developer have formally filed a Detailed Site Plan for the East Campus Project: Phase 1 consists of 423,970 sq ft of retail, 815 residential units, a hotel containing 175-200 rooms, and 104,400 sq ft of office space.  Phase II consists of 693 residential units. We are listed as parties of record.

Applicant requests to convert home to Ariel’s Hair Salon: property 2nd from corner, between two single-family homes, across from the Texaco. We have filed to be a Party of Record. An absentee owner is the proposing applicant, and not for a resident’s home business use.

A Note on Small Business Developments in the Route One Area from the Director of the Hyattsville CDC
 
As many of you already know, the Hyattsville CDC is trying to get local folks to consider opening their own businesses in the neighborhood: you know,  the "Think Globally, Work Locally," kind of thing.  The benefits derived from this local development focus can run the gamut from stimulating sustainable economic initiatives and reducing regional traffic, to strengthening the social network that makes places like Hyattsville so unique in this metropolitan area. Recently, we've been concentrating on helping attract and develop some new businesses, especially to generate some tenancies for the empty Route One locations.

One component of the Hyattsville CDC's 2008 / 2009 Strategic Plan, recently adopted in March by our Board of Directors, is to measurably increase business occupancies in Hyattsville. To that end we've been marshalling resources and energy. Hyattsville CDC Chairman Mike Franklin, who has been examining and assessing the downtown Route One business scene for more than a decade, observed that "the opportunities are there, but it takes more than just opportunity for a start-up business to get rolling in our market, you have to serve a true niche, and really know your customers."
